Keystone College to host Scranton STEMM Academy

Jun 12, 2025

Keystone College, in collaboration with the Scranton STEMM Academy, will host a week-long environmental science program titled “Exploring the Environmental ‘Ologies'” from June 16 through June 20, between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. daily, at the College’s Environmental Education Institute (KCEEI) on its Woodlands Campus.

Designed for students in grades 7 through 12, the program offers an immersive outdoor education experience focused on Mammalogy, Ornithology, Herpetology, Entomology, and Dendrology. Participants will engage in a variety of hands-on activities while developing core scientific skills, including observation, data collection, and analysis. A highlight of the week will be student-led mini research projects, allowing participants to investigate environmental topics of interest using real-world scientific methods.

“The ‘Ologies’ week provides a unique opportunity for students to engage directly with the environmental disciplines through experiential learning,” said Kelley Stewart, Director of the Woodlands Campus and the Keystone College Environmental Education Institute (KCEEI). “By participating in fieldwork and conducting their own small-scale research projects, students will gain a deeper understanding of the natural world while building the skills and confidence needed for future STEM studies.”

Students will explore Keystone’s 276-acre campus including the 170-acre Woodlands Campus, which serves as an outdoor classroom and includes 7.5 miles of scenic trails, rocky summit grasslands, creeks, ponds, vernal pools, and Northern hardwood forests.
